About Us

Judi Hammond

This Sunday at 5pm.  Judi served as secretary, administrator and taught many children's programs since the beginning of Bayside in 2002.

Early Monday morning, March 22, Judi peacefully said good-bye to this part of her life and began a new life in eternity.  She was sleeping peacefully when the Lord called her to His side.

A letter from Pastor Mike

Hi,

Thanks for your interest in Bayside Community Church.   If you are looking for a church to attend this Sunday, I hope that you will consider coming to ours.

We began our church in February of 2003 and since that time we've been a church where the elders and leaders take time to get to know people, and for them to get to know us.  We value relationships.  While we may not be the largest church in the Bay area, we have a genuine heart for God and a passion for living out our faith.  We continue to see new people each week.

As the founding pastor of Bayside I want our church to grow deep in Christ.   I also want us to continue to offer ministries that meet needs, support missions and someday plant new churches.   My vision is to be a church with strong Bible teaching, caring pastors and genuine relationships for people of all ages.

For that reason we need you.   If you are looking for a church where you are needed and want to grow in your faith, please visit us and take time to say hi.

I would love to not only be your pastor but also your friend.

See you soon, Mike

Jere & Crissi Allen:  HEART Academy

Jere Allen not only loves to teach the Bible, he has a love for families and a desire to help families live as God intended.  Jere exemplifies our  motto, "finding God's will and a church family can make a difference in your life, work and relationships."

Jere gives leadership to our family ministries at Bayside.  Working with a dedicated team of volunteers he oversees our Men's Accountability Group and HEART Academy.

Jere is married to Crissi and they have two daughters.  Jere grew up in Northern California; Crissi moved to the Bay area as a teenager from the Philippines.  In addition to working as a technology specialist for schools, Jere also works with Crissi to lead HEART Academy.

Jere's 20+ years of teaching experience include youth ministry, Bible, math, history, science, literature and computers for grades K-12.  His professional experience in Silicon Valley focused on training adults in software applications.  Jere graduated from San Jose Bible College majoring in Bible and Theology with a minor in math.  He is currently director of Technology Education for Beyond Technology Education helping schools to use innovative technology tools to improve teaching and learning.

Jere and Crissi desire to see revival within the family.  Most importantly, that parents teach their children the ways of the Lord.  This cannot happen until Mom and Dad experience the Holy Spirit’s victory in their lives themselves.  Reaching a child’s heart and capturing it for Jesus is the way to keep the church set-apart for Him so that others can see the glory of God.  They believe that a dynamic yet authentic family will be a sweet aroma to those who do not know Him yet.  This legacy is what they want to share with all Christian families.

Worship Ministry:  Shane Lewis

Shane and Karen Lewis first heard of Bayside when they received an invitation card to attend the grand opening in February 2003.  Their relationship was struggling and Shane knew that the only way to get things back on track was to be on track spiritually.  A few months later they were married and Shane started helping with the worship ministry.  A great vocalist who learned guitar so that he could lead worship, Shane has incredible energy, a great love for God and a love for people.

Karen leads the Moms Group, a group for young mothers and their preschool children that meets weekly.

What is Bayside?

Bayside began July 1, 2002 in the Fireside room of the Willow Glen Neighborhood Church building and expanded in September to two services.  Moving into the main auditorium, February 9, 2003 was our grand opening, the beginning of the regular Sunday services of Bayside - a church community.  One year later we launched our first church plant, Next Generation Christian Fellowship and in 2005 we purchased the building we were meeting in and have added a Korean worship service and a Vietnamese worship service to our campus.

A survey taken a few years ago asked people why they don't attend church.  Their top three answers were:

1. The people are unfriendly;

2. The services are boring;

3. The messages are irrelevant.

People who visit our church continually comment on how friendly our church is - friendly but not overpowering.  I refer to our services as contemporary and informal - by contemporary I mean that our worship services are fresh and enjoyable.  I'm not into weird and way out, in fact, we place a high value on worshipping God with reverence.  But we still like to laugh. By informal I mean that we don't hold to an outward standard of spirituality - there's no dress code.  Feel free to dress casual.  Feel free to dress up.  God is more concerned with the worship in your heart than the wardrobe in your closet!  Informal also means relaxed - we want you to leave our church feeling accepted and energized. I want our church to be a refuge from the struggles and problems we face daily.  "Be still and know that I am God," penned the writer of Psalm 46:10.

Our goal is to be a church with fun and enjoyable children's and youth ministries, small home based Friendship Groups meeting throughout the Bay area and a vision for planting new churches every 5 to 7 years. We are also involved in helping churches around the world through the support of missionaries.

I believe that the most important part of church life is building Friendships:  a deepening, personal friendship with a living Savior, Jesus Christ, and genuine, trusting relationships with other Christians.  Let me encourage you to ask me about our Friendship Groups where there is an opportunity to build friendships and study the Bible. Feel free to ask about Alpha, a ten week introduction to the Christian Faith that includes dinner and a video.

Our ministry is built on four key pillars: Teaching the Authority of God's Word with relevance and authenticity; Lifting high the name of Jesus through Worship; Believing firmly in the power of Prayer; and Sharing the love and forgiveness of Christ with boldness. We invite you to become part of our church family at Bayside. Feel free to talk to me if you'd like to know more about our church.

Your friend,

Mike Thorburn
