Children

Kidzone! - How and why do we do children's ministry at Bayside?

The passion of our church is to help raise children who not only go to church while they are young but continue to go to church in their teens and young adult years.  Many churches today have opted for a model of ministry where children, middle school, high school and college age students have a separate worship experience from their parents.  You arrive at church, you drop your child off and then you pick them up at the end of the worship service.

However, studies have shown that the most effective way to raise up spiritually strong children is to allow them to be part of the worship service.  Young adults leave church due to a lack of relationships with adults other than their parents (Fuller Seminary report, 2011).  At Bayside, children begin to worship with their parents at age 5 and then ages 5 through 6th grade are dismissed for their own Bible time just before the sermon.  Children grow up seeing their parents worship and being part of the church family.  High school students and young adults make up the worship ministry of our church and the music and messages are directed at young adults.

We want children to grow up knowing that Bayside is their church too.  We want to help parents learn how to model worship and help their children grow in their faith.

  • 1 Timothy 3:15

(that) you may know how one ought to behave in the household of God, which is the church of the living God, a pillar and buttress of the truth.

KidZone is our morning children's program for kids from infant through 6th grade. There are three groups: KidZone 024 (ages 0 to 4), KidZone K23 (ages Kindergarten to 3rd grade) and KidZone 426 (ages 4th to 6th grade). Our KidZone groups allow parents an opportunity to come to church, relax, and know that your child is learning about God while having fun.

For children ages newborn to 4, "KidZone 024" runs in the Tree House Room, a brightly colored and fun room run by caring and dedicated workers during the entire worship service.

For children Kindergarten through 3rd grade, "KidZone K23" offers friendships, snacks, fun and a great Bible lesson.  Children are dismissed just before the sermon.

For children in 4th through 6th grade we offer a unique, discipleship oriented experience that focuses on building a strong relationship with their Bible teacher and learning how to apply the Bible to life.  Children are dismissed just before the sermon.

AWANA

What is Awana?

Our mid-week children's program is called Awana.  It runs for 8 months beginning in September and ending the last week of April.  We chose Awana over other programs because over 90% of children who are in Awana from elementary age through high school continue to attend church and live spiritually strong lives.  We like to refer to Awana as "Sunday school on steroids"!  Fun games, loving adults and a strong biblical foundation make Awana a great program for your child.

Awana is an acronym for Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed, taken from the verse in 2 Timothy 2:15, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” Awana club meetings are divided into three sections: Bible Lesson Time, Handbook Time, and Game Time. During Game Time children enjoy play fast paced Awana games in the large games circle.  During Handbook Time, children learn verses, study the Bible, and do activities from their books, including family chores and community activity.  Awana books are divided into sections called Bible Challenges (for the T&T Club) and Red, Blue, and Green Jewels (for the Sparks Club). For each section completed, a child earns Awana dollars that he/she can spend at the Awana store. A child can earn many other awards also as the year progresses, including badges for his/her uniform.

Which Awana club should my child be in?

Awana has four clubs for elementary school.  Two year olds are in Puggles.  Three and four-year-old children are in Cubbies.  Sparks is the club for kindergarten through second grade.  Children who are in the third through sixth grade are in the T&T Club (Truth & Training).  Our middle school/ high school program on Wednesday nights is called The BASE.

When is Awana?

Bayside Community Church of San Jose Awana’s Club meets on Wednesday evenings throughout the school year, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM.

Is there a cost for Awana?

The cost per child is $50.00.  This covers the books, awards, badges, supplies and occasional treats and prizes.First time children will be given an uniform. If you need assistance for the fee please see pastor Wayne Peevyhouse.

Who do I pay?

Checks can be made out to Bayside Community Church of San Jose and given to any club director or to one of the commanders.

When does my child get their awards and/or uniform?

A child will receive their uniform approximately one week after their registration has been paid.  Awards and badges are given out at the end of the evening during the closing ceremony.

Who is responsible for my child’s awards?

Each club has a director.  The director is responsible to log all records for clubbers in their care.  The directors place orders for uniforms and awards.  The directors give awards after the child has earned them during closing ceremonies.  If you have any specific questions about your child’s book are missing awards, feel free to talk to the director of your child’s club.

What are the rules about my child completing sections in the books?

Children can complete as many sections in a book as they are able to.  Please make sure that your child knows the verses in their section.  Leaders are instructed to only give two “helps” per section, which means the child must have the verses memorized.

What program is my child eligible for?

Puggles:  Two year olds
Cubbies: three years old up to prior to kindergarten
Sparks: kindergarten through second grade
Truth & Training: third through sixth grade
The BASE:  middle school/ high school students

Who leads the Awana program?

All of the leaders of the Awana program are members or regular attendees of Bayside Community Church. All volunteers who work with the children have completed an extensive background verification check. The Commander for our program is Dan Oglesbee and his assistant co-Commander is Helen Oglesbee. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the Awana program, please call the church office. Someone will direct your call to these individuals or feel free to talk with pastor Mike Thorburn.
