Small Books about a BIG Savior
Christ in the Minor Prophets
In 1963 Ray
Stedman, pastor of Peninsula Bible Church, said
in his message "Genesis-Malachi, God Spoke in
Times Past," that he never reads Luke 24 without
wishing that he could have been there. He
was referring to the story of Christ on the day
of His resurrection when Christ walked with two
men on the road to Emmaus. This is what
Jesus said to them:
And beginning with
Moses and all the Prophets,
he explained to
them what was said in all the Scriptures
concerning himself... He said to them, "This is
what I told you while I was still with you:
Everything must be fulfilled that is written
about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and
the Psalms."
Luke
24:27,44
The last twelve
books of the Hebrew Scriptures, known properly
as The Twelve but called the Minor Prophets
because of their length, speak to all believers
about God's love, the work of the Holy Spirit,
the return and Day of the Lord and the kingdom
of God. They speak to issues of politics,
social justice and business ethics. They
cover a period of 300 years from the time of the
prophet Hosea in 350 BC to the prophet Malachi
in 460 BC. Great empires - the Assyrians
and Babylonians - rose and fell during this time
and the nation of Israel experienced the pain of
exile and the joy of restoration. The New
Covenant began to unfold as the nation returned
to the land and ceased to practice idolatry.
This study,
however, focuses on what these twelve books of
prophecy have to say about Jesus Christ.
Not the Christ who would come but the Christ who
is. As the prophets penned these words the
eternal Christ was already present but was not
yet come in the flesh as the God-Man. And
so in each of these books we see Christ
presented, Christ predicted and Christ
proclaimed.
They truly are
small books about a BIG Savior.
