Hark
The Herald Angels Sing
Christmas
2002
Peace
in the Midst of Conflict
Luke
2:1-20
December
22, 2002
Hark!
the herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn
King:
Peace
on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners
reconciled!”
Joyful,
all ye nations rise, Join the triumph of the
skies;
With
the angelic host proclaim, “Christ is born in
Bethlehem!”
Christ,
by highest heaven adored; Christ the Everlasting
Lord!
Late
in time behold Him come, offspring of the
virgin’s womb:
Veiled
in flesh the Godhead see; hail th’Incarnate
deity,
Pleased
as man with men to dwell, Jesus, our Immanuel.
Hail
the heaven-born Prince of Peace! Hail the Sun of
Righteousness!
Light
and life to all He brings, Risen with healing in
His wings.
Mild
He lays His glory by, Born that man no more may
die,
Born
to raise the sons of earth, Born to give them
second birth.
What
is peace?
1.
Christ gives us peace.
Hail
the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
Isaiah
9:6
For
to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and
the government will be on his shoulders. And he
will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Micah
5:1-5
Marshal
your troops, O city of troops, for a siege is laid
against us. They will strike Israel's ruler on the
cheek with a rod.
2
"But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
though you are small among the clans of Judah, out
of you will come for me one who will be ruler over
Israel, whose origins are from of old, from
ancient times."
3
Therefore Israel will be abandoned until the time
when she who is in labor gives birth and the rest
of his brothers return to join the Israelites.
4 He will stand and shepherd his flock
in the strength of the LORD ,
in the majesty of the name of the LORD his God.
And they will live securely, for then his
greatness will reach to the ends of the earth.
5 And he will be their peace.
Romans
5:1
“Therefore,
since we have been justified through faith, we
have peace with God through our Lord Jesus
Christ”
2.
Christ gives us righteousness and healing.
Hail
the Sun of Righteousness!
Malachi
4:2
“But
for you who revere my name, the sun of
righteousness will rise with healing in its wings.
And you will go out and leap like calves released
from the stall.”
Light
and life to all He brings, Risen with healing in
His wings.
Isaiah
53:1-5
1
Who has believed our message and to whom has the
arm of the LORD been revealed?
2 He grew up before him like a tender
shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had
no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing
in his appearance that we should desire him.
3
He was despised and rejected by men, a man of
sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one
from whom men hide their faces he was despised,
and we esteemed him not.
4
Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our
sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God,
smitten by him, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our
transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was upon him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
Luke
4:14-21
16He
went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up,
and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue,
as was his custom. And he stood up to read. 17The
scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him.
Unrolling it, he found the place where it is
written:
18"The
Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has
anointed me to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim
freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight
for the blind, to release the oppressed,
19to proclaim the year of the Lord's
favor."
20Then
he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the
attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in
the synagogue were fastened on him, 21and
he began by saying to them, "Today this
scripture is fulfilled in your hearing."
3.
Christ gives us deliverance and new life.
Mild
He lays His glory by,
Born
that man no more may die,
Philippians
2:6-8
6Who,
being in very nature God, did not consider
equality with God something to be grasped, 7but
made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a
servant, being made in human likeness.
8And being found in appearance as a
man, he humbled himself and became obedient to
death-- even death on a cross!
Born
to raise
the sons of earth,
Born
to give them second birth.
John
3:3
3In
reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth,
no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is
born again.
John
3:16,17
16"For
God so loved the world that he gave his one and
only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not
perish but have eternal life. 17For God
did not send his Son into the world to condemn the
world, but to save the world through him.”
Hark!
The herald angels sing,
“Glory
to the newborn King.”
