Christmas 2003:  We're Worshipping Jesus!

Sunday Worship

Acts 2:42-47

December 14, 2003

This is the church and this is the steeple, …

What’s supposed to happen when we come

to church on Sunday?

We enter into true worship on Sunday when:

Ephesians 5:19Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, 20always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1.  We join our hearts together in praise to God.

worshipping the Lord with passion

1 Timothy 4:11Command and teach these things. 12Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. 13Until I come, devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to preaching and to teaching.

2.  We give the Word of God prominence.

teaching the Word of God with relevance and authenticity

1 Corinthians 16:2On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income.

3.  We give back to God a portion of His goodness to us.

Hebrews 10:24And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. 25Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

4.  We come to move others, first, and be moved ourselves, second.

the power of “just being here”

believing firmly in the power of prayer

1 Corinthians 14:24But if an unbeliever or someone who does not understand comes in while everybody is prophesying, he will be convinced by all that he is a sinner and will be judged by all, 25and the secrets of his heart will be laid bare. So he will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, “God is really among you!”

5.  God works in the hearts of the unconverted and the unconvinced.

sharing the love and forgiveness of Christ with boldness

Hebrews 12:28Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe, 29for our “God is a consuming fire.”

6.  God is the audience and not the entertainer.

Psalm 100

A psalm. For giving thanks.

1      Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth.

2          Worship the LORD with gladness;

come before him with joyful songs.

3      Know that the LORD is God.

It is he who made us, and we are his;

we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

4      Enter his gates with thanksgiving

and his courts with praise;

give thanks to him and praise his name.

5 For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.
